County is known for its preserved scenic
beauty,
and relaxed peaceful lifestyle.
There's an old saying in the High
Country, "Getting here is easy, leaving is not." Alleghany County is
only 30 minutes from the interstate which makes it easily accessible
to folks.
Our students attend three elementary
schools and one consolidated high school. Sixty percent of the
Alleghany High School graduates go to college. Our Alleghany Trojan
varsity teams have excelled in football, basketball and softball.
Wilkes Community College
has a satellite campus in Sparta which enrolls approximately 1,600
students annually.
Much of the
land remains in agriculture (row
crops, tobacco, dairy, cattle and
sheep) with forestry, manufacturing and tourism also contributing to
the regional economy. Small farms are common and local craftsmen turn
out handmade paper,
fabric, quilts and toys. |
